John Edward Costigan

(Providence, Rhode Island, 1888 - 1972, Nyack, New York)

As an American artist, Costigan is most well known for his strong brush stroke and his use of the common man for his subject. He worked mainly with oils and watercolors and taught himself most of what he knew, and he became a member of the National Academy of Design in 1928. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, it was his aunt and uncle who relocated him and his siblings to New York City after they became orphaned. They were instrumental in developing his career in visual arts.
