Cassandra Christensen Barney

(1967 - )

Barney was born and raised in Orem, Utah. Her father was an artist, which she attributes as one of her earliest and biggest inspirations. She received her MFA from Brigham Young University in 2000. She paints personal visual narratives, showing stories of love, sorrow, hope and gratitude. She often uses her blog to ask viewers their responses to issues and questions she is showing through her artwork. She says her creative force behind her passion for art is the relationships she builds in this life. Her artwork often shows women, celebrating the strength and complexities found in femininity. She lives in Utah, where she enjoys the hot summers and her lush garden. Her paintings are very colorful, inspired by the environment around her. Her paintings also often reflect her religious beliefs, as they stand as her “testimony” or personal witness. She is a mother of three daughters, and married to Daniel Barney, an artist, educator, and her “biggest fan.” She has taught at The Waterford School and Brigham Young University, where she is currently a part-time faculty member.
