Valentin Aleksandrovich Serov was a Russian portrait painter. He was born in 1865, the son of two composers. He studied in Paris and in Moscow in his childhood. His early creativity was sparked by the realistic art of Repin. Later in his career he became a member of “The World of Art”, a Russian art association and magazine. His style changed in this period, losing some of his impressionistic figures and rather focusing more on the realistic and true nature of his subjects. When the revolution took place, he used his art to show his democratic beliefs, depicting a number of satirical figures exposing chastisers. HE was a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Art, resigning in 1905 as a gesture of protest against the execution of workers on strike. In his last years he focused on themes of mythology and other classical subject matter though his own personal interpretation. He died in Moscow in 1911.
