Impressionist painter William Frederick Ritschel was born in Nuremberg, Germany on July 11, 1864. In 1911 he made his way to Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, and there he focused on the Monterey Peninsula and surrounding sea. It was in Carmel that Ritschel died in 1949. His works can be found in over 15 museums including the Oakland Museum of California, the B.Y.U. Museum of Art, the Monterey Art Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C.
