Stewart Mark Beard

(Salt Lake City, Utah , 1959 - )

Mark Stewart Beard, a mid-to late-twentieth-century painter, was born and raised in Salt Lake City. He received his B.F.A. at the University of Utah and exhibited his work at the Robert Samuel Gallery in New York City, the Atrium Gallery in Salt Lake Public Library; etc. Beard's paintings and drawings are said to "show distinct signs of the influence of his experience growing up in Utah." According to the artist, "they represent a process of self-transformation," the result of a "liberating" New York experience; they also have "unique qualities" of "detachment" and an "ability to record the somewhat bitter memories of youth without indulging or apologizing for them." He is "also influenced by the painting styles of seventeenth-century Spanish and Dutch masters." Beard is "the great-grandson of pioneer artist George Beard," according to the artist.
