Caroline Keturah Parry

Caroline Keturah Parry, was a good example of one of several Utah women to make major local reputations for themselves during the period from the late 1910s and '20s through to a much later post—World War II era. Like Mabel Frazer, Parry was a student of Edwin Evans at the University of Utah in the 1910s; later she attended several sessions at the University of California at Berkeley. Then Parry moved to New York City for study in painting and sculpture at Columbia University (1924), with Mahonri Young at the American School of Sculpture (1925), and at the Art Students League (1926). Winning a scholarship at Cooper Union (1927), she also returned to New York for study under Leo Lentelli at the Art Students League (1935-36). Also like Frazer in the mastery of many means of artistic expression, Parry not only became a member of the National League of American Pen Women but also practiced painting and sculpture through a career of teaching on the elementary, secondary, and college levels of education. Holding faculty positions first at the College of Southern Utah (SUU) in Cedar City, and then Weber State College (WSU) in Ogden (1929-32), Parry also served under J.T. Harwood and A.B. Wright on the Department of Art staff a the U of U as instructor of art. Later, she joined the Salt Lake Art Center (Art Barn) teaching faculty. One of Caroline Parry's specialties in sculpture was the portrait bust. (d. October 19)
