(Yonkers, New York, 1920 - 2008, Kennebunk, Maine )

From AskARt: A seascape and landscape painter, Edward Betts studied at the Art Students League and Yale University. He acquired an M.F.A. at the University of Illinois, Champaign, where he also taught from 1949 to the 1970s. He began painting in the late 1940s on Monhegan Island, Maine. His work was exhibited in five Corcoran Biennials, and he is the author of books on painting landscapes and seascapes in watercolor and acrylic. Professor Betts passed away on May 17, 2008 and was buried in Kennebunk, Maine. --- From NationalAcademy.Org: Born in 1920, Edward Betts studied at the Art Students League, earned a BA from Yale University, and an MFA from the University of Illinois. After teaching for 35 years at the University of Illinois in 1984, he lived and worked in Kennebunk, ME until he passed in 2008. One-person exhibitions include Contemporary Arts, Inc.; John Heller Gallery; Midtown Galleries; Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois; Galveston Art Center; Phillips Exeter Academy; Retrospective, Iowa Wesleyan College Museum; Civic Art Center; Feingarten Gallery, Chicago; and the Swope Art Gallery, Terre Haute, IN. Selected group exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art; Corcoran Biennials of American Art; Brooklyn Museum of Art; American Painting Today, Metropolitan Museum of Art; National Institute of Arts and Letters; Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts, MI; and Bowdoin College Museum. The artist’s work is included in the collections of the Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; Butler Institute of American Art; New Britain Museum of American Art; Portland Museum of Art; Ogunquit Museum of American Art; California Watercolor Society; Upjohn Pharmaceutical Co.; Atlanta University Museum; and the Indianapolis Art Museum. Mr. Bett’s has authored several publications: Master Class in Watercolor; Creative Landscape Painting;Creative Seascape Painting; and Master Class in Watermedia. Mr. Betts is a recipient of numerous prizes from the National Academy of Design including a Ranger Purchase Award; a Gold Medal of Honor, Audubon Artists; and a Zabriskie Purchase Award, American Watercolor Society.
